Statolith preparation and observation methods adopted in Japan were reviewed for 4 ommastrephid squids, Ommastrephes bartramii, Dosidicus gigas, Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis, and Illex argentinus. Relationships between mantle length and age were exponenitial at the early life stages and almost linear at the subadult and adult stages.
