TICAD9 MAFF Seminar Titled “Fostering the Future Through International Collaborative Research: Young Researchers Engaging with Africa” Held in Yokohama

On Thursday, August 21, from 18:30 to 19:30, the TICAD9 Thematic Event (MAFF Seminar) titled “Fostering the Future Through International Collaborative Research: Young Researchers Engaging with Africa” was held in a hybrid format at Exhibition Hall D of Pacifico Yokohama. The event was organized by JIRCAS and supported by the Japan Intellectual Support Network in Agricultural Sciences (JISNAS).

AGRA, JICA, and JIRCAS Hold Joint Seminar on Food System Transformation

On August 22, in conjunction with the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), a special seminar featuring AGRA President Alice Ruhweza, titled “Building Climate-Resilient Agrifood Systems in Africa – the Role of Science and Public-Private Partnership," was held at the TKP Garden City PREMIUM Minato Mirai in Yokohama City. 

Research Contributing to Poverty Reduction, Nutrition Improvement, and Promotion of Sustainable Agriculture in Madagascar — JIRCAS Project Provisionally Selected for SATREPS Program

As a newly adopted research topic (biological resources field) in FY2020 of SATREPS (International Science and Technology Cooperation Program for Responding to Global Issues), which is jointly implemented by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Agricultural Research's proposed project was accepted with some conditions.

Project Leader Tsujimoto et al. Win Japanese Society of Crop Science Best Paper Award

Dr. TSUJIMOTO Yasuhiro, Project Leader of the “Africa rice farming system” project, and colleagues from the Crop, Livestock and Environment Division received the 20th Japanese Society of Crop Science Best Paper Award for the paper titled "AZ-97 (Oryza sativa ssp. Indica) exhibits superior biomass production by maintaining the tiller numbers, leaf width, and leaf elongation rate under phosphorus deficiency".

As part of the Easy Science and Technology Seminar organized by the Japan Prize Foundation, a video featuring a research project in Madagascar in which Dr. NISHIGAKI Tomohiro, Researcher in the Crop, Livestock and Environment Division of JIRCAS, is participating has been released in the Foundation’s website and YouTube.

Ceremony for the Completion of the SATREPS Madagascar Project

A ceremony to celebrate the completion of the FyVary Project (Breakthrough in nutrient use efficiency for rice by genetic improvement and fertility sensing techniques in Africa), under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), was held on September 8, 2022 at the Hotel Colbert in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

New Rice Varieties Developed by JIRCAS Introduced to the President of Madagascar

On May 10, 2022, at the completion ceremony of the “Project for Rehabilitation of Irrigation System in South-West of Alaotra Lake”, a grant assistance project by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the President of Madagascar was briefed on new rice varieties (FyVary32 and FyVary85) developed through the SATREPS project “Breakthrough in Nutrient Use Efficiency for Rice by Genetic Improvement and Fertility Sensing Techniques in Africa (Fy Vary Project)” which is being implemented by JIRCAS.

Workshop on Rapid Soil Fertility Evaluation Technology Held in Madagascar

A workshop on the rapid soil fertility evaluation technology developed in conjunction with the SATREPS "Project for Breakthrough in Nutrient Use Efficiency for Rice by Genetic Improvement and Fertility Sensing Techniques in Africa” was held in Madagascar to disseminate the output of the project to agricultural technology extension workers and other beneficiaries.

Project Leader TSUJIMOTO Receives the 20th Japan Prize in Agricultural Sciences, Achievement Award for Young Scientists

Dr. TSUJIMOTO Yasuhiro, Project Leader in the Crop, Livestock and Environment Division of JIRCAS has been awarded the 20th Japan Prize in Agricultural Sciences, Achievement Award for Young Scientists, for his research on the development and dissemination of effective rice fertilization technology suitable for cultivation environments in Africa. The award is given by the Foundation of Agricultural Sciences of Japan to young researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of agriculture.
