JIRCAS Report - Madagascar
The SATREPS project “Breakthrough in nutrient use efficiency for rice by genetic improvement and fertility sensing techniques in Africa (FY VARY Project)” organized a workshop, which also served as the mid-term evaluation of the project, at the Hotel Colbert in Antananarivo, Madagascar on December 12, 2019.
A bilateral meeting between Minister Lucien Ranarivelo of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Madagascar and JIRCAS President, Dr. Masa Iwanaga was held on August 30, 2019 for discussions on areas of research cooperation useful for further agricultural development of Madagascar in the future.
An inauguration ceremony to mark the opening of the research facilities developed by the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) Madagascar Project was held in Antanarivo, Madagascar on May 10, 2019.
JIRCAS President, Dr. Masa Iwanaga met with Dr. Harison Edmond Randriarimanana, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock of the Republic of Madagascar, and Dr. Papa Abdoulaye Seck, Minister for Agriculture and Rural Equipment of Senegal at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) Ministerial Meeting held in Tokyo on October 6-7, 2018.
The Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of Madagascar, Mr. Harison Edmond Randriarimanana visited JIRCAS on October 4, 2018 in conjunction with his stay in Japan for the 7th plenary meeting of the Coalition for African Rice Development (CARD) and high level ministerial talks.

JIRCAS is implementing the SATREPS project “Breakthrough in Nutrient Use Efficiency for Rice by Genetic Improvement and Fertility Sensing Techniques in Africa” in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAEP) of Madagascar. In order to promote the JIRCAS research activities in Madagascar, including this project, and to build a stronger joint research implementation system, JIRCAS President, Dr. Masa Iwanaga paid a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the MAEP on March 1, 2018.
A seminar on the SATREPS project in Madagascar entitled “Project for Breakthrough in Nutrient Use Efficiency for Rice by Genetic Improvement and Fertility Sensing Techniques in Africa” was was held at the JIRCAS International Conference Room on January 30, 2018.
JIRCAS President Dr. Masa Iwanaga attended the summit meeting between Prime Minister Abe of Japan and President Rajaonarimanpiania of Madagascar on August 27, 2016 at the Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) in Nairobi, Kenya.
Minister Roland Ravatomanga of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MAEP) of Madagascar and Ms. Rosette Lalatiana Rasoamanarivo, Interim Ambassador of the Madagascar Embassy in Japan, visited JIRCAS on March 9, 2016.
