On Friday, July 31, 2026, the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) successfully held the “Tsukuba Chibikko Hakase (Little Scientists) 2026 Open House,” welcoming 231 visitors.

Under the theme “Let’s Think About Global Food and the Environment: Learning About Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries from Developing Regions,” visitors had the opportunity to explore JIRCAS research activities around the world. Through exhibits featuring diverse varieties of rice and legumes, research introduction panels, actual specimens, and video interviews with researchers, attendees learned about the organization's international research initiatives. The research exhibits and mini lectures attracted considerable interest, with visitors enthusiastically asking questions and engaging directly with researchers.

The land-based shrimp aquaculture facility, a popular attraction every year, was attended by approximately half of all visitors. The library was also open to the public, where families were seen reading together and browse books related to the research exhibits.

Through this event, many participants gained a better understanding of global food and environmental challenges, as well as the research conducted by JIRCAS to address them. Moving forward, JIRCAS will continue to present its research activities in an accessible manner through public events and outreach programs, helping to deepen public understanding of global food and environmental issues and the scientific efforts to solve them.
