On Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the University of Tsukuba hosted the “Joint Research Institution Information Session for Doctoral Students” at its Future Society Design Building. The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) participated as an exhibitor with its own booth. This event was organized to provide doctoral students with an opportunity to learn about the activities and work of research institutions in Japan and to explore possible career paths. The 2026 event marked the second time the program had been held. Also, as a first-time initiative this year, a PR time was held at the entrance of the venue, and JIRCAS participated with the aim of attracting visitors to its booth.
The event attracted many students, primarily doctoral candidates from the University of Tsukuba, who had the opportunity to hear directly from representatives of various institutions about research activities and career opportunities. JIRCAS, represented by Dr. HAYASHI Keiichi (Program Director, Environment and Natural Resources), Dr. OMORI Keisuke (Program Director, Information and Strategy), and Mr. KITADA Hiromichi (Director, Rural Development Division), introduced the research center’s activities and engaged with students through presentations and question-and-answer sessions.
JIRCAS staff exchanged views with attending students on research interests, areas of expertise, interest in addressing societal challenges, and future career aspirations. They also addressed students’ concerns and questions regarding research practices and job hunting by introducing examples of work styles and support systems available at JIRCAS. Many students expressed positive sentiments, such as “I would like to work in an international research environment,” and “I want to conduct research that contributes to society.”
Going forward, JIRCAS will continue to foster future talent by communicating the appeal of JIRCAS as a research institution and the significance of international collaborative research through exchanges with young researchers who will lead the next generation.
