On May 18, 2026 (Monday), a total of 21 participants, including 12 trainees, 2 accompanying staff members from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Tsukuba, and 7 staff members from JICA Headquarters, visited JIRCAS as part of the FY2026 thematic training course titled “Prospective Agricultural Technologies as Solutions to Climate Change.” This course aims to strengthen the capacity of developing countries to utilize agricultural technologies that contribute to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
In the morning, participants visited the experimental farm in Hachimandai, where they learned about efficient water vapor collection technology from Dr. IKEURA Hiroshi, observed a demonstration of methane emission measurement in paddy fields by Dr. UNO Kenichi, and received an overview BNI-enabled wheat and its field trials from Dr. YOSHIHASHI Tadashi.
In the afternoon, lectures were held in the International Conference Room on the second floor of the main building. Dr. HAYASHI Keiishi, Program Director for Environment, introduced climate change mitigation and adaptation technologies, followed by a presentation by Dr. Uno on alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation. Lively question-and-answer sessions were held after the lectures.
JIRCAS will continue to actively share information on its initiatives to address global environmental and food challenges through such collaborations and exchanges.
