Dr. HASADA Katsumi, Senior Researcher in the Rural Development Division, has compiled the results of his research on food security conducted in Laos and published them as a book series on March 31, 2026.
The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) promotes research that addresses challenges faced by agriculture, forestry, and fisheries in developing regions and contributes to food and nutrition security. This publication, which summarizes the results of field research conducted in rural and mountainous areas of Laos, is part of these efforts.
The book clarifies the current state of food availability and nutrition in these regions, with a particular focus on the shortage of animal protein, which is a key issue. It analyzes this challenge from four perspectives: “availability,” “access,” “utilization,” and “stability.” The study examines livestock production, collection of wild resources, livestock use, food purchases, animal protein intake, and seasonal variations, using a multilayered approach spanning national, regional, and household levels.
In addition, the book proposes practical solutions suited to rural and mountainous conditions, taking into account region-specific factors behind insufficient protein intake and drawing on findings from other fields. These include the sustainable use of wild resources, the introduction of poultry farming and rice–fish culture, and the preservation and processing of animal-based foods.
Based on insights gained from the field in rural Laos, the publication offers valuable suggestions for addressing challenges related to food and nutrition security.
