Julio César García-Rodríguez, Yamanaka Naoki and Colleagues Receive Honorable Mention for the PhytoFrontiers Best Student Paper Award 2021

The paper “Virulence Diversity of Phakopsora pachyrhizi in Mexico” by Julio César García-Rodríguez of Mexico's National Institute for Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research (INIFAP), Yamanaka Naoki, Senior Researcher in the Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division of JIRCAS, and their colleagues received honorable mention for the PhytoFrontiers Best Student Paper Award 2021 of the American Phytopathological Society.

The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) is now accepting applications for fixed-term employment of young researchers.

SATREPS Project Representatives from Burkina Faso Visit JIRCAS

The representatives of the SATREPS project in Burkina Faso, Dr. Bambara Dasmane of the National Institute of Environmental and Agricultural Research (INERA) and Dr. Traore Mamoudou of the National Soil Survey Institute, visited JIRCAS on October 13, 2022. JIRCAS is conducting international joint research in Burkina under the SATREPS project. Mr. Sagnon Adama, a PhD student at Joseph Kiservo University, who accompanied them, will continue his technical training at JIRCAS until October 31.

JIRCAS-FFTC International Sugarcane Workshop Held

The workshop “Innovation and Networking of Sugarcane Research for Future Sugarcane Industry in the Asian and Pacific Region” co-hosted by JIRCAS and the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for Asia and the Pacific (FFTC), with the support of Kasetsart University, was held online on September 15, 2022.

MOU and Work Plan Signing Ceremony Held with Cambodia’s Royal University of Agriculture

JIRCAS and the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) of Cambodia held an MOU and Work Plan signing ceremony for the integrated climate change project on September 28, 2022 in the capital city of Phnom Penh. This project is an international joint research project that aims to reduce methane emissions from rice paddies through appropriate water management technology, and is scheduled to be implemented until the end of March 2026.

Students from the College of Bioresource Sciences of Nihon University Visit JIRCAS

A total of 16 students from the Department of International Development Studies, College of Bioresource Sciences, Nihon University, visited JIRCAS on September 16, 2022 as part of the laboratory seminar of their summer training program.

Former JIRCAS Fellow Du Zhumei Receives the 2022 Japanese Society of Animal Science Encouragement Award

Dr. Du Zhumei, a JIRCAS Fellow in FY2019-2020 from China Agricultural University and now a faculty member of Yangzhou University, received the 2022 Japanese Society of Animal Science Encouragement Award at the 130th annual meeting held at Tokyo University of Agriculture on September 14-17, 2022.

Ceremony for the Completion of the SATREPS Madagascar Project

A ceremony to celebrate the completion of the FyVary Project (Breakthrough in nutrient use efficiency for rice by genetic improvement and fertility sensing techniques in Africa), under the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), was held on September 8, 2022 at the Hotel Colbert in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Report on TICAD 8 Side-Event “Managing African Soil for Food Security and Environmental Sustainability”

An official side event of the 8th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8) entitled “Managing African Soil for Food Security and Environmental Sustainability” was organized by JIRCAS on August 30, 2022, with the support of the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Visit of Vietnam’s Plant Protection Research Institute (PPRI), Head of Pathology & Phyto-Immunology Department and Researcher to JIRCAS

Dr. Nguyen Huy Chung, Head of Pathology & Phyto-Immunology Department of Vietnam’s Plant Protection Research Institute and Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tho, researcher from the same institute, visited JIRCAS from August to September 2022.

JIRCAS Received Recognition Award at the Thailand National Science and Technology Fair 2022

The Thailand National Science and Technology Fair is Thailand's largest science and technology exhibition held once a year. This year, it was held for nine days from August 13 to 21 at the Impact Exhibition and Conference Center in Nonthaburi Province. JIRCAS exhibited the Brachiaria variety "Issan," the result of international joint research with the Department of  Livestock Development, Thailand. The exhibitors received an award for its contribution to science and technology education in Thailand.

Niigata Prefecture Kashiwazaki Senior High School Students Visit JIRCAS

On Monday, August 22, 2022, a total of 29 students (27 second-year students and 2 leaders) from Niigata Prefecture Kashiwazaki Senior High School visited JIRCAS as part of the Super Science High School program.

Proceedings of the JIRCAS-SEAFDEC/AQD Joint Workshop on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) Research

JIRCAS, in collaboration with the Southeast Asian Fisheries Development Center (SEAFDEC) in the Philippines, conducted a 10-year research project on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) from 2011, to promote sustainable and equitable production of marine products in the Asian monsoon region. We have now published the proceedings of the workshop held in August 2019.

PNAS Issues "Cozzarelli Prize" Certificate for the 2021 Best Paper: BNI-enabled Wheat Research

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) has issued the "Cozzarelli Prize” certificate  for the best paper of 2021, which has now been awarded to the recipients from JIRCAS.

Science Council of Japan Holds Symposium on “Problems and Challenges of Sustainable Development of Oil Palm Plantations in Southeast Asia”

The Science Council of Japan is organizing a public symposium with the theme "Problems and Challenges of Sustainable Development of Oil Palm Plantations in Southeast Asia" to be held online on September 29 (Thu), 2022. Dr. KONDO Toshiaki, Senior Researcher of the Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division will give a presentation in the symposium.
