Uzbekistan, which is located in Central Asia, has been focusing on science, technology, and innovation for the past 10 years to achieve sustainable economic development. In the meantime, JIRCAS has been conducting the "Research project on measures against farmland damage from salinization" (subsidized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) and the "Development of sustainable resource management systems in the water-vulnerable areas” (Resource Management in Asia and Pacific Islands) project in Syrdaryia Province, Uzbekistan since 2008. The project has contributed to solving the problem of salt damage in the region.

Ambassador Abdurakhmonov and President Koyama exchanged opinions on issues in the agricultural sector, such as water-saving technology and superior varieties of fruit trees. The ambassador and his delegation also visited the soil experimental facility of JIRCAS and had a chance to interact with the corresponding researchers.
