The kick-off ceremony for the SATREPS Project on “Sustainable replantation of oil palm by adding value to oil palm trunk through scientific and technological innovation” (SATREPS Palm Project), a joint research collaboration of JIRCAS and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was held at the USM Murad Mohd Noor Auditorium in Penang, Malaysia on September 19, 2019.

The kick-off ceremony for the SATREPS Project on “Sustainable replantation of oil palm by adding value to oil palm trunk through scientific and technological innovation” (SATREPS Palm Trunk Project), a joint research collaboration of JIRCAS and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was held at the USM Murad Mohd Noor Auditorium in Penang, Malaysia on September 19, 2019. 

The ceremony was officiated by USM Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Asma Ismail. In attendance were JIRCAS President, Dr. Masa Iwanaga, SATREPS Palm Trunk Project Leaders, Dr. Akihiko Kosugi and Prof. K. Sudesh Kumar, and representatives from the JICA Malaysia Office, Japan Science and Technology Agency Singapore Office, Consulate-General of Japan in Penang, and the Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council. The first meeting of the Joint Coordinating Committee was held after the ceremony attended by about 50 participants. 

The SATREPS Palm Trunk Project aims to evaluate the environmental impact of logging and abandonment of oil palm trunk (OPT) scientifically and economically, improve the plantation environment, and promote sustainable plantation management. Moreover, it also aims to create a new biomass industry by developing technology for manufacturing high value-added products including biogas and biodegradable materials.
