Researcher Maeno Receives the 21st Century Hope Prize of the 5th Niigata International Food Award

Dr. Kotaro Maeno, a researcher in the Crop, Livestock and Environment Division was among those chosen to receive the 5th Niigata International Food Award, winning in the 21st Century Hope Prize category. A press conference was held at the Japan Press Center on July 9, 2018 to announce the award.

TARF Open House Day 2018

The Open House Day of the Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) was held on June 24, 2019 with exhibits and demonstrations centered on the JIRCAS slogan "seeding for the future".

Pres. Iwanaga at the Rice CRP Independent Steering Committee Meeting in Montpelier, France

JIRCAS President, Dr. Masa Iwanaga, attended the Independent Steering Committee (ISC) meeting of the Rice CGIAR Research Program (CRP) held in Montpelier, France on June 7-8, 2018. The Rice CRP is promoted by research institutes (IRRI, AfricaRice, CIAT) under CGIAR together with research institutes from France (CIRAD, IRD).

JIRCAS exhibit at the Biomass Expo 2018

The Biomass Energy-Materials Conference & Expo 2018 (Biomass Expo 2018) was held on May 30 to June 1, 2018 at the East Hall of the Tokyo Big Sight in Ariake, Tokyo. The Biomass Expo is a showcase for Japan’s biomass power generation, heat utilization, fuel, livestock feed, excrement processing, composting etc. The JIRCAS booth featured activities on biomass research and the latest research achievements on utilization of local resources in developing regions.

JIRCAS at the 7th G20 Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists in Argentina

JIRCAS President, Dr. Masa Iwanaga, attended the 7th G20 Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists (G20-MACS) held in San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina on May 28-30, 2018. The G20 MACS is an initiative which brings together chief agricultural scientists from G20 countries and selected international organizations to deliberate on global research priorities and to facilitate collaboration between institutions with the aim of strengthening research on sustainable agriculture worldwide.

JIRCAS International Symposium 2018 focuses on “Women in Fisheries: Sustainable Development Goals and Contributions to Research and Industry”

The JIRCAS International Symposium 2018 with the theme “Women in Fisheries: Sustainable Development Goals and Contributions to Research and Industry” will be held at the U Thant International Conference Hall of the United Nations University (UNU) in Shibuya, Tokyo on November 6, 2018.

Rice planting at the Hachimandai Experimental Field

The rice cultivation season at JIRCAS started with the transplanting of rice seedlings at the Hachimandai Experimental Field from May 21-24, 2018. Various crops developed by JIRCAS and overseas research institutes such as the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and the Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) are cultivated for research purposes.

JIRCAS at the 6th CGIAR System Council Meeting in Germany

JIRCAS Pres. Masa Iwanaga, together with officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Agriculture of Japan, attended the 6th CGIAR System Council Meeting held on May 16-17, 2018 in Berlin, Germany.

JIRCAS Opens to the Public with 2-day Events

The Open House Day, an annual event in conjunction with the Science and Technology Week was held on April 21-22, 2018 at the JIRCAS Headquarters in Tsukuba, Ibaraki.

JIRCAS ranks 7th in the “Plant Science and Zoology” category of highly cited papers based on the Essential Science Indicator (ESI) updated ranking of research institutions in Japan released by the Clarivate Analytics of the Web of Science Group on April 19, 2018.

State Minister Miyakoshi visits TARF

Mr. Mitsuhiro Miyakoshi, State Minister in charge of promotion of hometown development and export of agriculture, forestry and fishery products, visited the Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) in Ishigaki, Okinawa on April 13, 2018.

Knowledge transfer seminar for the Royal Forestry Department of Thailand

A knowledge transfer seminar was organized by JIRCAS for the Thai Royal Forestry Department (RFD) on February 6, 2018 in Khon Kaen City, northeastern Thailand. The seminar provided practical information to RFD engineers on developing seedlings suitable for afforestation throughout Thailand.

44th TARF Public Lecture on Eco-friendly Pest Control Methods

The 44th TARF Public Lecture on eco-friendly pest control methods was held at Ishigaki City, Okinawa Pref. on March 30, 2018. This public lecture has been organized since 2007 with the aim of introducing the research activities of TARF in a way that the general public could easily understand, and to get feedback from local residents on the needs and expectations with implications in daily life.
