A group of 38 second-year senior high school students in the science-mathematics curriculum of the Niigata Prefectural Nagaoka High School, a Super Science High School (SSH), visited JIRCAS on August 7, 2018. The activities in the research program on “Technology development for stable production of agricultural products in the tropics and other adverse environments” were introduced by the Program Director in-charge, Dr. Kazuo Nakashima. The students showed interest in various research activities in this program and asked questions about rice research, biomass research, and the status of global efforts for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The students also had a tour of the experimental field for an introduction of the breeding materials used for development of new rice varieties, African yam, cowpea and other crops. The visit provided JIRCAS with an opportunity to introduce research activities to the younger generation.
