On February 4, JIRCAS and the JICA Tsukuba Center of the Japan International Cooperation Agency will jointly present a session at the “Wednesday Night Science Café.”

Organized by the Tsukuba Science Tour Office, the Wednesday Night Science Café is a weekly evening series running from December 3, 2025, to March 4, 2026, at the event space “co-en” near Tsukuba Station. It has become popular as a relaxed venue where people can enjoy science casually over a cup of tea. Each session brings together research and educational institutions in Tsukuba, generating new ideas through interdisciplinary collaboration.

The theme of this session is:
“Rice Cultivation × On-the-Ground Challenges in Asia and Africa — Connecting Technology and Human Resources through Communication, Application, and Collaboration.”

Focusing on rice cultivation in Asia and Africa, the event will serve as a dialogue linking research and international cooperation. Researchers and international development specialists will discuss local challenges, directions for technological innovation, and the importance of human resource development from their respective perspectives.

JIRCAS has participated in this event series continuously over the past two years, and this marks its first collaboration with JICA Tsukuba. By combining the strengths of both organizations—the ability to create (research and technology development) and the ability to deliver (local adaptation and human resource development)—the event will explore new possibilities for international cooperation rooted in real-world settings. The program will clearly explain the full process from basic research to application and field dissemination, making it enjoyable and accessible for high school students and the general public as well.
