The Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) of the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) held the 54th TARF Public Lecture, titled “Learn about Sugarcane Ratoon Cultivation," on Friday, March 14, 2025, from 19:00 to 20:30 at the Audiovisual Room on the 2nd Floor of the Ishigaki City Health and Welfare Center. A total of 81 participants attended the event.
Dr. TERAJIMA Yoshifumi, Senior Researcher at TARF, served as the lecturer, introducing the current state and significance of ratooning in sugarcane-growing regions worldwide. He also discussed the numerous factors that intricately affect ratooning and presented the research being conducted at JIRCAS to develop technologies aimed at increasing the number of ratoon cycles.
During the Q&A session following the lecture, participants raised specific questions and shared opinions on cultivation practices, such as the timing of root cutting and its applicability. The discussion highlighted the high level of engagement from sugarcane industry professionals, including growers, leading to valuable exchanges of insights. We appreciate the meaningful dialogue that took place.
