On October 11, 2024 (Friday), 20 second-year students and one faculty member from the Ishikawa Prefectural Kanazawa Nisui High School visited JIRCAS as part of their “Tsukuba Science Tour.”
At JIRCAS, various activities are conducted with partners around the world to address food and environmental issues. During this visit, the students deepened their understanding of food and environmental problems in developing countries by observing the exhibits and listening to the lectures, while also reflecting on the significance of JIRCAS’s research and development activities and how these contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Following this, Senior Researcher NISHIGAKI Tomohiro (Crop, Livestock and Environment Division) gave an engaging and humorous presentation focusing on “soil,” which is essential for food production. He discussed about research and technological developments aimed at improving food production in Africa based on his personal experiences in the field.
Although Africa was unfamiliar to them, some students showed interest in the fields of “agriculture” and “international relations” after knowing and understanding the earnest efforts of Dr. Nishigaki in tackling food and environmental problems through on-site research and development. It is hoped that this visit to JIRCAS will broaden the horizons of the students and foster a global perspective in science and technology innovation.
