The Republic of Malawi is a traditional agricultural country where about 80% of the population engages in small-scale farming. Major exports include tobacco, black tea, and sugar. However, due to delays in the development of irrigation facilities and low agricultural productivity, the economic foundation is fragile, making it one of the poorest countries in the world. The Malawian government places importance on promoting market-oriented agriculture and encouraging private investment, while recognizing that improving agricultural productivity, responding to climate change, and strengthening food security are important problems that need to be solved.

After hearing the lecture explaining Malawi’s agricultural policy plan, Dr. TSUJIMOTO Yasuhiro (Project Leader, Crop, Livestock and Environment Division) introduced the “P-dipping” paddy rice fertilization technique, which is effective in simultaneously reducing fertilizer and avoiding environmental stress.

Next, Dr. NAKAMURA Satoshi (Project Leader, Crop, Livestock and Environment Division), presented his research findings on soil and cultivation management techniques, such as the “phosphate rock soil-enriched compost” that contribute to the stabilization of small-scale farming systems in Africa.

In closing, Deputy Ambassador Chikwemba expressed his desire to explore future joint research opportunities through information exchange between researchers.
