The 6th Meeting of the International Scientific Advisory Board for Strategy “MIDORI”
Based on the Strategy for Sustainable Food Systems “MIDORI” formulated in May 2021, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) initiated the project "Accelerating application of agricultural technologies which enhance production potentials and ensure sustainable food systems in the Asia-Monsoon region" in FY2022. The goal was to accelerate the application of technologies that promote climate change mitigation and sustainable agriculture in the Asia-Monsoon region. JIRCAS oversees the project under the name "Green Asia" (project acronym).
The sixth meeting was held online on March 14, 2025. Opening remarks were delivered by JIRCAS President Koyama and Deputy Director-General Shinobu, representing MAFF, who highlighted the ‘ASEAN Guidelines for Crop Burning Reduction’ in which some technologies from the Green Asia Technology Catalog were adopted.
The Secretariat of the Advisory Board then responded to the comments made by the advisory board members at the 5th meeting and reported on the progress of the project activities so far. The advisory board members expressed appreciation for the steady progress within a short period of half a year and provided valuable comments as follows:
- It should be noted that field trial data in one region is variable and does not necessarily apply to other regions.
- Mapping the cataloged technologies by agro-ecological zone will inform business planning and facilitate technology implementation.
In addition, issues arising during the research activities in Green Asia and general topics were discussed, and the Board members provided valuable advice and comments related to the following points:
- Adoption of a social science approach that considers support measures such as subsidies and financing, regulations, and market needs
- Importance of a cost-benefit analysis that considers risks at various stages
- Bundling of technologies to create synergies
- Importance of startup support through private-public partnerships and cluster building
- Usefulness of the database of project technologies
