Summary

The International Scientific Advisory Board for Strategy "MIDORI" is an independent advisory board comprised of outstanding scientists and/or executive officials of leading agricultural research institutes/universities. The members provide advice and comments on the reports and other outputs generated by the project, so that these results could be better utilized as reference for promoting food systems transformation in Asia-Monsoon region.

Mohamad Zabawi bin Abdul Ghani (Director General, Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI), Malaysia)

Dato’ Dr Mohamad Zabawi is Director General of Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). He obtained his PhD in Water Stress Physiology and MSc in Tropical Agriculture from The Reading University, United Kingdom. As a researcher, he has over 30 years of experience on soil science (soil conservation), agroecological zonation, climate change, green technology, and water stress physiology. He also was a member in numerous technical committee and task force in climate change for Malaysia. Not only at national level, Dato’ Dr Mohamad Zabawi also actively promote climate change (vulnerability and adaptation), green technology and biomass energy at regional and international. Throughout his tenure as a researcher, his publications on environmental issues and crop performance have been published in local and international journals. His previous position as Director of Agrobiodiversity and Environment Research Centre, has succeeded to led MARDI to innovate various green technologies and guidelines for climate change to ensure sustainable agriculture in Malaysia. He was appointed a Director General of MARDI in 2021 and has a bigger role to lead Malaysia’s agriculture research and development to boost sustainability of the food production.

 

Jean Balié (Director, CGIAR Poverty Reduction Livelihoods & Jobs Impact Area Platform, CGIAR)

Jean Balié is Director of the CGIAR Poverty Reduction Livelihoods & Jobs Impact Area Platform. He previously served as Regional Director, South East Asia and Pacific, CGIAR, and Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). He has over two decades of experience in leadership and expertise developing policies for agriculture, food, and rural development. He most recently served as a member of Addressing Food System Fragilities and Building Back Better, a  working group under the CGIAR COVID-19 Hub. As Director General of IRRI, he sets the global strategic direction of the institute and manages its affairs in accordance with the policies and decisions of the IRRI Board of Trustees. He joined IRRI in 2018 as Head of the Agri-Food Policy Platform and, before becoming Director General, served as Research Director – External Engagement and Deputy Director General for Research. Prior to IRRI, he worked as a Policy Officer, Senior Economist, and Program Manager at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). He earned his PhD in agricultural economics at the University of Göttingen in Germany, and has master’s degrees from Montpellier SupAgro, École Nationale Supérieure Agronomique de Toulouse (ENSAT) and the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM).

 

Joachim von Braun (President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences; Distinguished Professor for Economic and Technological Change Center for Development Research (ZEF), Bonn University, Germany)

Joachim von Braun is Distinguished Professor for economic and technological change at Bonn University, in the Center for Development Research (ZEF).  His research is on economic development, science and technology policy, poverty reduction, food and nutrition security, agriculture, resource economics, climate, and trade. von Braun is President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences of the Vatican, and member of various academies of science. In 2020 and 2021 he served as Chair of the Scientific Group for the Food Systems Summit 2021 of the UN Secretary General. He is Vice President of the NGO Welthungerhilfe and was director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) based in Washington DC. He was elected as President of the International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE), and received several national and international honors and awards.

 

Fadjry Djufry (Director General, Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Standardized Instruments (BSIP) , Indonesia)

Prof. (R) Dr. Fadjry Djufry is assigned by the Ministry of Agriculture Decree of 2022 as acting Director General of BSIP (Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Standardized Instruments) of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) previously Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD)(Now, he is Director General). BSIP is a new organization under the Ministry of Agriculture IAARD is already transformed to support the implementation of standards in agriculture sectors in Indonesia. On January 25, 2022, he was inaugurated as the 630th National Research Professor and the 159th Ministry of Agriculture Research Professor in Indonesia. His research professor’s speech was entitled ‘Development of Innovative Climate Smart Agriculture based on Adaptive Cultivation Technology towards Modern Sustainable Agriculture’. He had noted carrier as Director for ICECRD (2015-2019), Head of South Sulawesi AIAT (Indonesian Assessment Institute for Agricultural Technology) (2012-2015), and Head of Papua IAIT (2008-2012). Djufry also got involved in university as a Postgraduate Lecturer at Makassar Islamic University (2012-2015), Hasanuddin University, Makassar (2012-2015), and Lambung Mangkurat University, Banjarmasin (2005-2007). He obtained his Bachelor's in 1993 majoring in Agriculture from Hasanuddin University, Makassar. His Master's (2000) and Doctoral (2005) degree was achieved from IPB University with a focus on the study of Agro-climatology/Plant Modeling.

 

Shenggen Fan (Chair Professor and Dean, Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP), China Agricultural University (CAU), China)

Dr. Shenggen Fan is currently Chair Professor and Dean of Academy of Global Food Economics and Policy (AGFEP) at China Agricultural University (CAU). Prior to joining CAU, Dr. Fan served as director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) from 2009 to 2019. He is currently the CGIAR System Board member, vice board chair of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and vice board chair of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). He is also a member of advisory council at the World Food Prize Foundation, and a member of the EAT-Lancet commission. He is a Fellow of Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA), and a Honorary Life Member, International Association of Agricultural Economists (IAAE). Dr. Fan received a PhD in applied economics from the University of Minnesota and bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Nanjing Agricultural University in China. Dr. Fan is currently a member of CGIAR System Board.

 

Jacqueline d’Arros Hughes (Director General, International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT))

Jacqueline d'Arros HUGHES, currently the Director General of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad, India. A virologist by training she has worked in the United Kingdom and Ghana, before moving to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Nigeria, followed by the World Vegetable Center in Taiwan, and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) before moving to ICRISAT. She has an extensive publications record and strong interests in plant health, epidemiology, gender equity, nutrition, and remote sensing/digital agriculture.

 

Phisamai Srichayet (Director, Institute of Food Research and Product Development (IFRPD), Kasetsart University, Thailand)

Dr. Phisamai Srichayet is the Director of Institute of Food Research and Product Development (IFRPD) in Kasetsart University (Bangkhen Campus). At the same time, she is also a Professional Researcher in Department of Food Processing and Preservation at IFPRD. She has a PhD in Food Science from Kasetsart University (Thailand), an MSc and a BSc in Food Technology from Silpakorn University (Thailand). Her research expertise is Thermal Processing, Fruit and Vegetable Processing Technology, Beverage Technology, and Product Development. Therefore, her research interests mostly focus on value added products of fruit and vegetable such as beverage, jam, sauce, canned fruit and preserved fruit. Moreover, Dr. Phisamai has experience working in the private sector and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Thus, her work is mostly knowledge transfer of food processing for people being able to produce and distribute as their own small business.

President of Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences(JIRCAS). Graduated from Faculty of Liberal Arts, University of Tokyo. After joining the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries of Japan in 1979, engaged in econometric analyses of global food situation at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) (1986-93) and JIRCAS (1993-). Also, in charge of research strategy setting in JIRCAS from 2002 until 2015 when moved to Vice President. Appointed to the current position in 2021.
