On December 5, 2024 (Thu), 20 first-year students from Kumamoto Prefectural Uto High School visited JIRCAS as part of their "SSH Future Experience Learning" program.

During this visit, the students were first introduced to the research and development activities that JIRCAS is undertaking to solve global food and environmental problems. Then, there was a discussion on why it is necessary for Japan to promote research in and contribute to the development of the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors in developing regions. The students also exchanged opinions on how these research activities contribute to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) based on the results of group discussions.

Next, Dr. KONDO Toshiaki (Senior Researcher, Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division) explained the current situation and issues of tropical rainforests and oil palms in Southeast Asia. He further introduced the efforts to better understand and solve these problems through research and technological development, using many photos and actual plant samples. The students were highly interested in the mysteries of the tropical rainforest and asked many questions.

Through such school visits, JIRCAS aims to provide opportunities for the younger generation to develop a global perspective and an interest in science, technology, and innovation, and to think about their future paths from a multifaceted perspective.
