On November 29, 2024 (Fri), 40 first-year students from Saitama Prefectural Kumagaya High School visited JIRCAS as part of their Tsukuba Science Tour.
During the visit, JIRCAS introduced the students to its research and development activities aimed at addressing global food and environmental issues. The students participated in discussions about Japan's role in promoting research in the agricultural, forestry, and fisheries sectors in developing regions, the importance of collaboration with partner institutions, and how this research contributes to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They engaged in group discussions and exchanged opinions on these topics.
Next, Dr. SUWA Renpei (Senior Researcher, Forestry Division) shared his experiences as a researcher and discussed with the students the challenges of incorporating new technologies, such as AI, into his research. He deepened the students' understanding of the essence of being a researcher and explained dynamic forest ecology research conducted with international partner institutions and local people, using videos as part of the presentation.
Through such school visits, JIRCAS aims to provide opportunities for the next generation of young people to develop a global perspective and foster an interest in science, technology, and innovation.
