On November 20, 2024 (Wed), 72 first-year junior high school students from Salesian International School Setagaya visited JIRCAS as part of their field trip.
During this visit, they were introduced to the research and development activities undertaken by JIRCAS, aimed at solving global food and environmental issues. The students were made aware of Japan’s role in promoting research in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors in developing regions as well as the importance of collaboration with partner institutions in these efforts.
Following this, Dr. YAMANAKA Naoki (Senior Researcher, Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division) and Dr. MATSUI Kayo (Researcher, Rural Development Division) presented their respective research and findings.
Dr. Yamanaka explained the development of rust-resistant soybeans in South America, highlighting the research methods and the new varieties developed as a result of joint research with partner institutions. Using numerous samples prepared by Dr. Yamanaka, the students eagerly observed the new soybean varieties and rust-affected leaves under a microscope.
Dr. Matsui, on the other hand, focused on agricultural research in arid regions, particularly on "salinity-affected soils." She demonstrated how to measure soil permeability and explained in detail the issues related to poor water drainage in saline areas. The students were deeply interested in the high agricultural potential of arid regions and the challenges of farming in areas affected by soil salinity.
The visit sparked many questions from the students, increasing their interest in the research and technological developments at JIRCAS and its contributions to international cooperation. JIRCAS hopes to continue providing opportunities through such school visits to inspire the next generation of young people to have a global perspective and become interested in science, technology, and innovation.
