On November 1, 2024 (Fri), 39 first-year students and 2 faculty members from the Gunma Prefectural Kiryu High School visited JIRCAS as part of their “Tsukuba Science Tour.”

Since this visit involved first-year students, the focus was on introducing JIRCAS’s efforts to address global food and environmental issues in collaboration with various partners worldwide, and exploring how these efforts contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As a result of group discussions, the students concluded that research in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries contributes to all SDGs, reflecting an understanding of how research and the dissemination of its results can have wide-ranging impacts.

Following this, Dr. OGATA Takuya (Biological Resources and Post-harvest Division) explained how his team’s research on quinoa utilizes the crop's abilities to improve productivity and stability even in environments unsuitable for crop production, such as arid and high-temperature areas. The students showed great interest in the quinoa samples and related food products brought to the venue, asking many questions eagerly.

Many students expressed interest in research and development activities in fields such as "agriculture" and "international development." They posed detailed questions about the language skills required and methods for conveying technology to people in the field.

Moving forward, JIRCAS hopes to continue providing opportunities through school visits to foster a global perspective and interest in science, technology, and innovation among the younger generation.
