We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, and extensively experienced professional in the field of agriculture and biological sciences, with a native level of competence in the English language, to fill the position of English Communications Advisor. 

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the vital mission of JIRCAS, a leading research organization that plays a core role in international collaborations in the field of agriculture, forestry and fisheries research in Japan. The main responsibility is to provide English language support to JIRCAS staff, especially researchers, to improve their language skills, which will enable them to confidently take on key roles in international agriculture research, ultimately strengthening JIRCAS’ position and enhancing its contribution to global agricultural research efforts.

Research Planning and Partnership Division, English Communications Advisor (Fixed-term), 1 person

  1. Proofreading of various English materials, including official documents (e.g., MOU, Work Plan, JRA), international communications, abstracts of papers for publication, presentations, speeches, etc.
  2. Translating various kinds of regulations and in-house notifications, and documents directed at foreign employees.
  3. Formulating and executing strategies for upgrading the level of English skills of employees.
  4. Providing direct guidance and assistance to employees for effective oral research presentations, as well as essential support for international symposia and conferences.
  5. Providing immediate response to request of employees for English assistance and advice as necessary.
  6. Translating articles from the JIRCAS website to enhance the content of the English website.

Qualifications for application 

  1. The applicant must have at least a Bachelor’s degree.
  2. Technical expertise and research experience in agricultural or biological sciences are essential qualifications.
  3. Proficiency in English and Japanese, both oral and written, at a native level of competence is required. This ability is vital for tasks such as translation, editing of research documents, official correspondence, and providing support for international conferences.
  4. Must be able to work effectively with limited supervision and must have a strong attention to detail..

Employment conditions

  1. Term
    From the start of employment until March 31, 2027
  2. Place of employment
    • Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture
  3. Salary 
    • Monthly salary (Basic salary): JPY380,000 - 427,000, depending on qualifications and experience, in accordance with the JIRCAS Staff Salary Regulations.
    • Bonuses: Equivalent to 1.65 months’ basic salary (less for first bonus after recruitment), paid twice a year in June and December.
    • Allowances: Include commuting allowance, overtime work allowance and regional allowance. However, allowances for dependents and housing are not provided.
    • Note: Monthly salary and other benefits are subject to change in accordance with revision of regulations.
  4. Day-off and leave
    • Saturdays, Sundays 
    • Public holidays, year-end and new year holidays (Dec 29–Jan 3)
    • Annual paid leave: 10 days in 2024 if employment begins in July 1
    • Others : sick leave, summer leave (3 days), nursing care leave (5 days), special  leave (marriage, maternity, mourning) 
  5. Working hours
    • Standard working time (8:30 am - 5:15 pm)
    • Flextime system.
  6. Welfare benefits
    • Health insurance and pension by MAFF mutual aid association
    • Employment insurance, Workers’ accident compensation insurance

Selection process

  • After screening of documents, an interview will be conducted at the JIRCAS Headquarters (1-1 Owashi, Tsukuba, Ibaraki). Applicants will be notified of the results of the selection process and the interview schedule at a later date.
