Symposium on "Promoting the Implementation of Scalable Agricultural Technologies in the Asia-Monsoon Region" at the 6th IRC 2023

The 6th International Rice Congress (IRC), hosted by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), marked a milestone by being held in the Philippines for the first time. Held over four days from October 16-19, the Congress drew global attention to the latest developments in rice research and agriculture. Among the highlights was a symposium titled "Promoting the Implementation of Scalable Agricultural Technologies in the Asia-Monsoon Region" on October 17, where JIRCAS researchers collaborated with colleagues from the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO).

In Session 1 of the symposium, JIRCAS provided a comprehensive overview of the Green Asia project, highlighting ongoing research initiatives. Key topics included Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) technology, the International Differential System for Rice Blast Control, and the use of drones to measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

In Session 2, JIRCAS and NARO expanded on the discourse by introducing additional rice-related technologies not covered in the first session. These innovations were drawn from the "Technology Catalog Contributing to Production Potential and Sustainability in the Asia-Monsoon Region," a compilation resulting from Green Asia activities. JIRCAS focused on measuring the methane emission reduction effects of AWD technologies using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Meanwhile, NARO showcased advances in smart production system, prolonged midseason drainage technology, an ICT-based water management system, and paddy field dam technology.
