A group of students from the Tsuchiura Daiichi Senior High School visited JIRCAS on November 22, 2019 as part of the school program on deepening their knowledge of the activities of companies, research institutes, and government offices, and foster a feeling of positive contribution to society.
Dr. Toshiaki Kondo and researchers of the Asia Biomass Team explained about the JIRCAS project in Malaysia on the development of high value-added technology using old palm trunks aimed at sustainable land use and regeneration of oil palm plantations.
The students viewed various exhibits on value-added technologies and had a brief tour of experimental facilities. During the open discussion with researchers, the students freely asked questions on how to become a researcher, how to interact with people in developing regions, and how to deal with environmental issues.
