56th TARF Public Lecture to Be Held on January 23
“Nitrogen as a Key Link Between Agriculture and the Environment for a Sustainable Future”

Announcement

January 9, 2026
JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF)

Main Points

  • There will be an explanation of the ongoing global “nitrogen imbalance” and its impact on the Earth’s environment, based on the latest scientific findings.
  • The lecture will introduce the role of nitrogen fertilizer in supporting agricultural production and the problems caused by its excessive use, such as groundwater contamination and eutrophication of coastal waters, using local examples.
  • It will clearly present JIRCAS’s research initiatives on reducing nitrogen loads and promoting sustainable nitrogen use, linking them to everyday life.

Overview

The Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) of JIRCAS will hold the 56th TARF Public Lecture, titled “Understanding the Relationship between the Environment and Nitrogen,” at the Ishigaki City Health and Welfare Center on Friday, January 23, 2026. This lecture will provide an easy-to-understand introduction to nitrogen cycling in the global environment, the impacts of human activities, and the latest research being conducted by JIRCAS to reduce nitrogen loads.

Nitrogen is an essential element for our lives and for agricultural production. However, excessive use and emissions of nitrogen cause global environmental problems, including water pollution and increased greenhouse gas emissions. Based on the latest scientific findings, this lecture will introduce efforts to maintain food production while reducing environmental burdens. Nitrogen is a familiar yet crucial topic for everyone when considering a sustainable society.

The lecturer will be TARF Researcher HAMADA Kosuke, who works on reducing nitrogen leaching from farmland and analyzing the nitrogen footprint of food systems. The lecture aims to clearly explain the connections between daily diets, agriculture, and the global environment for local residents, while highlighting the role of Ishigaki Island as a research hub connecting the region with the world.

We look forward to your participation and hope many of you will join us.
