Overview
The JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) will hold the 50th Public Lecture on June 30, 2023 at the Ishigaki City Health and Welfare Center. The theme of the Public Lecture is "Agricultural Research that Balances Productivity Improvement and Environmental Protection: How Research Contributes to the Sustainable Development of Agriculture on Ishigaki Island in the Face of Rising Fertilizer and Feed Costs, Environmental Protection, and Productivity Improvement.”
With the recent sharp increase in fertilizer and feed prices and growing concern for environmental protection, there is a need to develop technologies to maintain and improve productivity while reducing environmental impact. In this public lecture, we will provide information on the current grim situation surrounding agriculture on Ishigaki Island, as well as an overview of the “Sustainable Food Systems Strategy MIDORI” currently being promoted by the government, and the strengthening of SDGs and environmental measures that are being addressed as issues in the strategy. Ongoing research by TARF on how to combine productivity improvement and environmental protection will be presented. The lecture will be conducted in Japanese only.
Based on the research results obtained, we will convey the importance of cooperation among various sectors and citizens in disseminating the technology to Ishigaki Island.
