TARF Holds the 44th Public Lecture on March 30, 2018

Overview

The JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) will hold the 44th Public Lecture on March 30, 2018 with the theme “Pest Control Methods You Need to Know, Not Just Pesticides”. As basic knowledge for pest control, we will explain various pest control methods, their characteristics, and how to combine them effectively. From the perspective of environmental conservation, it is also important to utilize integrated pest management that does not rely solely on agricultural chemicals. In addition, we will introduce the research activities of TARF in Thailand by explaining about sugarcane white leaf disease, its vector insects, and the development of control technology for sugarcane white leaf disease based on the weaknesses of the insect pests.

TARF 44th Public Lecture Details

The JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of agriculture and the stable production of agricultural products in tropical and subtropical developing regions of the world. The public lectures aim to introduce some of its research activities to the general public in an easy-to-understand manner in the hope that the information will help the public understand the research activities and contribute to their daily lives.

This is the 44th TARF Public Lecture, which was first held in May 2007. In this lecture, "Pest Control Methods You Need to Know, Not Just Pesticides", we will explain the basics of pest control, including various pest control methods, their characteristics, and integrated pest control methods that combine them effectively. We will also introduce the research activities of TARF in Thailand through explanations of sugarcane white leaf disease, its vector insects, and the development of technology to control sugarcane white leaf disease based on pest weaknesses. From the viewpoint of environmental conservation, the use of integrated pest management that optimally combines not only chemical pesticides but also arable and biological methods is expected.
