45th TARF Public Lecture
The JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of agriculture and the stable production of agricultural products in tropical and subtropical developing regions of the world. The public lectures aim to introduce some of its research activities to the general public in an easy-to-understand manner in the hope that the information will help the public understand the research activities and contribute to their daily lives.
This is the 45th TARF Public Lecture, which was first held in May 2007. This lecture, Breeding Fruit Trees: New Passion Fruit Variety 'Sunny Shine', will cover the basic knowledge of breeding methods for fruit tree breeding, basic information on passion fruit that we have been working on recently, characteristics of the new passion fruit variety 'Sunny Shine' bred by TARF, and future prospects for breeding. So far, TARF has bred the papaya varieties 'Ishigakisango' and 'Ishigaki Wondrous', and local farmers have been cultivating these varieties. Recently, we have bred a new passion fruit variety, 'Sunny Shine', and are currently conducting detailed evaluations of its broad applicability and characteristics through trial cultivation by farmers. We hope that the TARF varieties will continue to contribute to the production activities of tropical fruit growers in Ishigaki City.
