About the Tropical Agricultural Research Front (TARF)
The Tropical Agricultural Research Front (TARF), located in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, takes advantage of climatic and geographical conditions similar to those of overseas research sites to conduct research and development on agricultural technologies applicable to developing regions in the tropics, subtropics, and the Asia-Pacific island regions. With its facilities—such as experimental fields (approx. 21 hectares), greenhouses, and an open laboratory equipped with lysimeters—TARF also contributes to domestic agriculture by promoting the breeding of rice and sugarcane, preserving genetic resources of tropical fruit trees, sugarcane, and other tropical crops, and releasing new varieties of beans, papaya, passion fruit, and forage crops for the Nansei (Southwest) Islands.
