The 5th Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) Meeting of the FY Vary Project

The 5th Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting of the Fy Vary Project was held on October 12, 2021 in a hybrid format at the Hotel Colbert, Antananarivo and zoom online. The meeting was organized to agree on the progress and plans of the project and was chaired by the Director General of Agriculture of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Madagascar (the counterpart country research representative). The opening remarks were given by the Secretary-General of the Ministry, the Director General of JICA in Madagascar, and JST Chief Research Officer Nagamine. Then, the Dr. TSUJIMOTO Yasuhiro, Fy Vary Project Leader, expressed his gratitude to the Madagascar side for promoting the project in the absence of Japanese researchers, and explained the results of the past year and plans for the final year. After that, the R/D minutes for the extension of the project (about 4 months) and the document for handing over the equipment to the research institute in Madagascar were signed. In addition, it was also agreed that three new rice varieties, namely, FyVary32, FyVary45 and FyVary85, will be registered and certified seed production will begin. The meeting did not show the effects of the 18-month absence of JIRCAS researchers due to the pandemic, and confirmed the high level of interest and commitment to the project on the part of the Madagascar side. The meeting was covered by many media outlets, and the project results, including the new rice varieties and the P-dipping technology, were widely disseminated.
