JIRCAS Releases Strategy for Sustainable Food Systems “MIDORI” Technology Catalog for the Asian-Monsoon Region
―Contributing to Production Potential and Sustainability in the Asia-Monsoon Region―

Main Points

  • The “Technology Catalog Contributing to Production Potential and Sustainability in the Asia-Monsoon Region (Ver.1.0)” was released on March 27, 2023 on the JIRCAS website.
  • The catalog, available in English and Japanese, consists of 23 technologies that have been developed in Japan or through international collaboration in recent years, and that can contribute to the Sustainable Food Systems Strategy “MIDORI” target areas, such as reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and chemical fertilizers.
  • Implementation of these technologies is expected to contribute to the establishment of sustainable food systems in the Asia-Monsoon region.

Overview

JIRCAS has released the “Technology Catalog Contributing to Production Potential and Sustainability in the Asia-Monsoon Region (Ver.1.0)”, a compilation of applicable technologies which were developed in Japan or through international collaboration, and which are expected to contribute to the establishment of sustainable food systems in the region.

The Asia-Monsoon region, including Japan, shares similar regional features such as high temperature and humidity, paddy-rice based agriculture, and a high proportion of small and medium-sized farmers.

Therefore, JIRCAS has compiled a list of technologies that could contribute to the Sustainable Food Systems Strategy “MIDORI” target areas, such as reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, chemical fertilizers, and chemical pesticides, from the results obtained by Japanese research institutes through domestic and international joint research over the past 10 years. The Technology Catalog Ver.1.0,  which has just been released, includes a total of 23 technologies developed by JIRCAS and NARO categorized into  area of contribution, items (rice, wheat, livestock, etc.), target process within the supply chain (production, distribution, consumption, etc.), and status of achievement in the development of technology (demonstration or implementation). More technologies will be added in the future, including results from forestry and fisheries research, and newly developed technologies.

The technology catalog is intended to be used by a diverse range of stakeholders in the Asia-Monsoon region, including government officials, researchers, extension officers, producers, and the private sector. It is expected that the implementation of these technologies will help in building sustainable food systems in the Asia-Monsoon region.

This technology catalog is part of the “Green Asia” project ―Accelerating application of agricultural technologies which enhance production potentials and ensure sustainable food systems in the Asia- Monsoon region, which is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF).
