The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) have been presenting the Japan Award since 2007 to young foreign researchers who have made outstanding contributions to research and development on agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related industries in developing regions.

 (1) Research must be related to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, or related industries (including food industry and environmental fields) in developing regions.  (2) The applicant must be under 40 years of age (as of January 1, 2020).  (3) The applicant must be a national of a developing country or region who belongs to an overseas research institute or university and is engaged in research and development work related to agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and related industries in developing regions.  (4) The applicant must be able to participate in the award ceremony and presentation of the award results scheduled to be held in Japan.

A certificate of recognition and a cash prize of US$5,000 (MOTAI-JIRCAS Award*) will be awarded to each of up to three recipients.

 *This award is funded by a donation from Mr. MOTAI Shigeru Motai, former Chairman of the AFFRC, and supported by the JIRCAS Young Researcher Award Program.

• Research institutions (both domestic and international) are requested to nominate candidates.
• Only one nomination from a research institution, including branch offices, is accepted.
