TARF Holds the 43rd Public Lecture on February 8, 2018

Overview

The JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) will hold the 43rd Public Lecture on February 8, 2018 with the theme “Plant Biotechnology: A Tale of the Past and Present”. Currently, it is becoming more and more difficult to secure necessary food and nutrition in developing regions due to population growth and worsening environmental conditions. Plant biotechnology is expected to be one of the solutions. In the 43rd TARF Public Lecture, we will review the history of the agricultural application of plant biotechnology and introduce the research activities of TARF to solve the food problem by plant biotechnology, such as the breeding of drought-resistant rice and the development of new technologies.

43rd TARF Public Lecture

The JIRCAS Tropical Agriculture Research Front (TARF) conducts research that contributes to the sustainability of agriculture and the stable production of agricultural products in tropical and subtropical developing regions of the world. The public lectures aim to introduce some of its research activities to the general public in an easy-to-understand manner in the hope that the information will help the public understand the research activities and contribute to their daily lives.

This is the 43rd TARF Public Lecture, which was first held in May 2007. In this public lecture, "Plant Biotechnology: A Tale of the Past and Present", we will look back at the history of agricultural applications of plant biotechnology, including tissue culture and genetic modification, and also explain genome editing, which has been attracting attention as a new technology in recent years. We will also introduce the research activities of the TARF, including the breeding of drought-resistant genetically modified rice and the development of genome editing technology for rice. Currently, it is becoming more and more difficult to secure the necessary food and nutrition in developing regions due to population growth and worsening environmental conditions. The use of plant biotechnology is expected to be a solution to this problem.
