JIRCAS International Symposium 2019 “International research collaboration to tackle transboundary plant pests: Contributions to Sustainable Development Goals”

Related Research Program
Stable Agricultural Production

Crop damage due to plant pests is estimated to account for 20-40% of attainable yield and has become a serious threat to food security. Climate change and global warming, and globalized movement of people and commodities, are the main factors that contribute to the spread of transboundary plant pests, resulting in worsening damage to agricultural productivity. With the growing concern across all countries and regions, the G20 Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists (MACS) which was held in Japan this year focused on transboundary plant pests along with climate change. Furthermore, 2020 has been designated as the International Year of Plant Health to increase awareness on the importance of healthy plants in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Science (JIRCAS) plays a core role in international collaboration in the field of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in Japan. In order to contribute to the SDGs, we are tackling various problems of agriculture, forestry and fisheries in developing regions. We are also pursuing an extensive project on plant pest control, encompassing several countries in the tropics and regions with adverse environments.

This international symposium is organized in order to promote international research cooperation on transboundary plant pests, and to identify priority areas that should be pursued by international research collaborations, through the presentations of the leading experts and researchers at the forefront of related fields and discussions from the perspective of contributing to SDGs.
