The Technical Workshop on Water Management System for Methane Emission Reduction in Paddy Fields was held on September 17th, 2025

On September 17th, 2025, "Technical Workshop on Water Management System for Methane Emission Reduction in Paddy Fields" was held at the Royal University of Agriculture in Phnom Penh. The workshop was attended by Japanese researchers and representatives from related organizations involved in the project, as well as counterpart researchers from the Royal University of Agriculture and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia. Participants included Cambodian government agencies such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, the Ministry of Environment, the Pursat Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology (PDWRAM), and the Pursat Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (PDAFF), project stakeholders from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Cambodia Office, as well as representatives from the Asian Development Bank and private consultants. The workshop was a great success, with 45 participants in person and 15 participating online, demonstrating high interest.

During the workshop, Japanese and Cambodian researchers shared progress reports on the project as well as case studies from other countries, which we believe helped participants visualize concrete outcomes. In addition, two researchers dispatched by the project to Japan for training, as well as a staff member from Cambodia's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries who was dispatched to the JICA issue-specific training course "Prospective Agricultural Technologies as Solution of Climate Change" reported on the results of their training in Japan.

While this technical workshop focused on output 1, water management, the participation of representatives from international organizations and the private sector is expected to lead to the spread of technologies to reduce methane emissions from rice paddies. We hope to continue to create similar opportunities for other research outputs, with the aim of sharing and disseminating the technologies being addressed in the project.
