  • Focusing on tropical forests in the Asian region, the symposium will feature presentations and discussions aimed at proposing innovations from Asia that can simultaneously achieve resilience of tropical forests and sustainability of the forest industry.

Overview

The Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) will hold the JIRCAS International Symposium 2023 entitled "Innovations to enhance the resilience of tropical forests and sustainability of the forest industry" on Friday, November 17, 2023, at the U Thant International Conference Hall of the United Nations University. The symposium will be held both in person and online via Zoom webinar.

In recent years, there has been a growing international debate on the need for resource management to enhance the climate and environmental regulating functions of tropical forests in the regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In addition, there is a growing recognition of the need to implement regulations to curb deforestation as an essential measure in the fight against climate change and the conservation of biodiversity.

In this context, this symposium will focus on tropical forests in the Asian region. It will invite researchers, companies and policy makers who are actively involved in tropical forest initiatives in Asia and around the world. The main objective is to propose innovations from Asia that can harmoniously balance the resilience of tropical forests and the sustainability of industry. This symposium will serve as a platform to promote common understanding among speakers and symposium participants, and provide an opportunity to exchange views on how to achieve environmental conservation and sustainable industries.

JIRCAS organizes the annual JIRCAS International Symposium, which features presentations and discussions on a wide range of topics related to agriculture, forestry and fisheries in developing regions, all in the context of promoting sustainable development. Notable recent symposia include "Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture in the Sustainable Food Systems" on November 22, 2022, and "The Role of Science, Technology and Innovation in Achieving Sustainable Food Systems in the Asia Monsoon Region―A Platform for International Collaboration" on November 17, 2021. These symposia are easily accessible on the JIRCAS Channel on YouTube, providing a valuable resource for those interested in these critical discussions.
