JIRCAS President Iwanaga Appointed as Member of FAO Advisory Group
― Applying Japanese Technology and Experience to the Development of the World's Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Industry ―

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialized agency dedicated to the development of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and rural development around the world, with the goal of eliminating hunger and ensuring that all people have access to sufficient quantities of high-quality food to lead active and healthy lives.

The Director-General of FAO, Dr. Qu Dongyu, who took office in August 2019, has set a vision of better production, sustainability, nutritional status and living standards in collaboration with various partners. In order to provide advice and recommendations to the Director-General on strategies to improve FAO's overall activities, an Advisory Group consisting of experts on agriculture, forestry, and fisheries from around the world was established, and JIRCAS President Masaru Iwanaga was appointed as a member of the Advisory Group. In addition to President Iwanaga, the Advisory Board consists of a total of 12 experts from governments, universities, research institutions, NGOs, and other organizations selected from around the world, including the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Development of the Republic of Rwanda, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Wageningen University in the Netherlands, the President of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA), and the former Chairman of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The Advisory Group will hold joint meetings at least once a year for the next four years, as well as bilateral meetings between the Director-General and the members. The first meeting was held on February 25-26, 2020 at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.

As a member of the FAO Advisory Group, President Iwanaga will provide the FAO with advice and recommendations based on the research activities of the JIRCAS on agriculture, forestry, and fisheries in developing regions, and the technologies and experience of the Japanese agriculture, forestry, and fisheries industry. In this way, it is hoped that Japan's knowledge will be utilized for the development of agriculture, forestry and fisheries around the world.
