Molecular Cloning and Characterization of cDNAs for Genes That Are Responsive to Dehydration Stress in Higher Plants

[Synopsis]
We isolated 16 independent cDNAs (ERDs) for genes that are early-responsive to dehydration in Arabidopsis thaliana by using the technique of differential hybridization. We also isolated 10 independent cDNAs (CPRDs) for genes that are responsive to dehydration stress in Vigna unguiculata. Sequence analyses of these genes indicate that their products may play a role in the protection of cells from dehydration.
