The JIRCAS Southeast Asia Liaison Office was established in Bangkok, Thailand in 1972 serving as the base for JIRCAS activities in Southeast Asia.
Last year marked the 50th anniversary of its establishment.

With the lifting of travel restrictions due to COVID-19, a symposium was held in Thailand on December 14, 2023 to celebrate the occasion.

■ New Technologies and Research Outputs
———————————————————————————————
JIRCAS conducts research activities in Southeast Asia and the Liaison Office in Bangkok serves as the hub for these activities.
In this issue, we would like to introduce two of our research achievements in the region.

● Year-round implementation of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) across three cropping seasons improves farmers' benefits and reduces greenhouse gas emissions
The results of this study showed that farmers in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam who implemented AWD for three cropping seasons increased their annual profits by 6% while at the same time contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 38%.

● Spawning season of the edible tropical oyster in the coastal area of Myeik in southern Myanmar
Edible oysters mature year-round, but the main spawning season was found to peak at the beginning and end of the dry season in October to November and April to May, respectively.
Harvesting oyster seedling spat during these peak seasons may contribute to efficient oyster farming.
