Screening cowpea for drought tolerance

[Synopsis]
Drought-tolerant Iines of cowpea were screened for adaptation to the semiarid tropics of West Africa. These Iines we re able to grow vigorously in the dry season using residua l soil moisture and they yielded an adequate amount of fodder and grains (about 1 ton per ha) without any precipitation and irrigation.
