Variants of wheat partially lacking Wx proteins for breeding waxy wheat
Description
[Synopsis]
Bread wheat carries three waxy (Wx) proteins which are responsible for the amylose synthesis of of endosperm starch. By gel electrophoretic techniques, we identified variants of wheat which partially lacked the Wx proteins. This finding enable us to produce wheat varieties deficient in all three Wx proteins by crossing the variants. The wheat variants lacking all Wx proteins will show a waxy phenotype free of amylose.
