Studies on cellulolytic bacteria in the rumen of tropical domestic ruminants and characterization
Description
[Synopsis]
Cellulolytic bacteria, Ruminococcus albus, Ruminococcus flavefaciens and Fibrobacter succinogenes, were isolated from the rumen of water buffalo and Kedah-Kelantan (KK) cattle in Malaysia. The bacterial strains from water buffalo displayeda higher cellulase activity than those from KK cattle. Frequent transfer of cultures promoted very high levels of cellulolytic activity. The log phase cultures retained their cellulolytic capability and viability for 4 weeks when stored at 4°C.
