Poem monument of Kunio Yanagida

Mr. Kunio Yanagita came to Ishigaki Island as a reporter for the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun newspaper during his seven-day stay beginning on January 24, 1921. Since then, he continued to introduce the culture of Yaeyama until his later years, making Yaeyama area known throughout Japan as a treasure trove of folklore and performing arts. The inscribed poem was published in a local newspaper on February 1 of the same year, shortly after he left Ishigaki Island.
"Cowry shell in the sand of Arahama shore, even its empty name is still buried" (note: translated without talent for poetry)"
