Importation and cultivation of mangoes to Japan

Mangoes were brought to Japan in the mid-Meiji period

It is said that mangoes were brought to Japan in the middle of the Meiji era (1868-1912), but since they were brought in as seeds at that time, there was no record of the cultivar name, and seedlings were grown by seedling propagation. It was in 1958 that the University of Hawaii introduced four of the best cultivars (including 'Haden') bred in Florida to Okinawa. In the 1980s, with the introduction of greenhouse cultivation, stable fruit production finally became possible, and the first steps toward domestic mango production were taken.
