Japan's Mango Import

Import volume is about 8,500 tons, about 2.5 times the domestic production

Mango cultivation using facilities is gradually spreading in Japan, but the country imports far more than it produces domestically. In 2013, the volume of mango import was 8,589 tons. Mexico was the top importer with 3,569 tons (about 42% of the total), followed by the Philippines with 1,733 tons (about 20%), and Thailand with 1,309 tons (about 15%). (Fig. 3)

The mango cultivars imported vary from country to country. The cultivars ‘Haden’, ‘Kent’ and ‘Keitt’ are imported from Mexico, ‘Manila Super' (trade name for ‘Carabao’) from the Philippines, and ‘Nam-Dorkmai’ and ‘Mahachanok’ from Thailand. Ref: Statistical data on imported fresh fruits in 2013. For the importation of fresh mango fruits into Japan, it is essential that the fruit be subjected to local vapor heat treatment and undergo phytosanitary inspection.
