Mango Production in Japan

Japan's production volume is about 3,000 tons

Currently in Japan, mangoes are grown in Miyazaki and Kagoshima prefectures as well as Okinawa. According to data from 2013, 3,327 tons of mangoes are produced annually in Japan. Of these, Okinawa produced the most (1,597 tons, 48% of total), Miyazaki produced 1,126 tons, and Kagoshima produced 446 tons (Fig. 1).

The monthly shipment volume of domestic mangoes to the Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market is shown in Figure 2. Shipments from Miyazaki and Kagoshima, which cultivate mangoes in heated greenhouses, are from April to July, while shipments from Okinawa, which cultivates mangoes in unheated greenhouses to take advantage of its subtropical climate, are from June to September, peaking in July. Almost all of these domestic mangoes are of the Irwin variety, regardless of where they are grown.
