Mango Propagation and History: Southeast Asia and Africa

From India to Southeast Asia and Africa

Mangoes were introduced to the Malay Peninsula from India by monks and traders around the 5th-4th century B.C., and later spread to continental Southeast Asia and islands such as Indonesia. Ref: Mukherjee and Lits (2009), Knight and Schnell (1994)

The Portuguese, who had colonies in Asia and Africa at the time, introduced mangoes from Asia to the African continent. Another theory indicated that mango was introduced to East Africa from Persia and the Arab world by Arab traders around the 10th century. Ref: Knight and Schnell (1994)
