The plants are slender, terete, irregularly branched and acuminate at the apical end. This species is slightly cartilaginous. The branches are loosely intricate. The color of this seaweed is bright red when it is alive, but it changes to dark red when dried. These plants grow on shady rocks especially under other larger seaweeds such as Sargassum in lower intertidal to subtidal zones along shorelines exposed to strong wave activity.

Fresh specimen.
