The branches of this species are alternate, terete, tapered toward the tips, and have short and acuminate branchlets. The apices of the branchlets have several spines, and filaments that attach to other branchlets. The plants are rusty to dark red in color, and form soft, bushy, complex clumps on rocks or attach to other seaweeds in subtidal zones along calm to moderate wave exposed shorelines.
