The main branches of this species are cylindrical or slightly compressed with several spines at the basal portion. The leaves are oblong with a cuneate base with an acute apex and have serrations on the margins. The vesicles are elliptical to fusiform at the top. The plants grow to 1-1.5 m high, and form dense communities in mid to lower intertidal zones along shorelines with moderate to calm water movement.
